Love and Hate… Administered with Sugar

She stood on the writing blotter in the center of my desktop.

She stretched herself up as tall as she could, three whole inches.

Looking me in the eyes she said, with a steely glare,

“So, what is this going to be? A poem or a fairytale?”

“It’s your story, Sweetie, tell it as you wish it to be.”

“I despise fairytales with their moral to the story and happy endings.

I am an elf and not a fairy. Fairies are stupid airheads with wings.

My name is Sweetie, the Candycane Elf, and this bow shoots magical sugar arrows.”

“And what does a magical sugar arrow actually do?” I carefully asked.

“It gives a Slow One diabetes,” she barked. “I hate humans.”

“So, it’s a weapon that can kill a man?” I asked even more carefully.

“Well, in small doses, it only makes the sour ones sweeter.”

She nocked a sparkly white arrow and looked at me as if accusing.

“Why exactly do you hate humans, the Ones you call Slow?”

“I used to target bickering children. I used to love my power.

I could reunite friends and repair romances, Make frowns turn to smiles.

But people have been getting harder to sweeten and renew.

They put poisons in the garden and poisons in the fields.

The air is getting toxic, and the conversations sour to spoiled.

They are forever angry and take it out on everything.

They can’t even see me when I’m glammered,

Yet they try to slay me like a pest or ugly bug.

I used to like the humans, especially the younger ones.

I loved them and they loved me, even though I wasn’t even there.

But you can only be punished by nonbelievers for so long

Before love becomes dark hatred and vengeance in my heart.”

I nodded with a sadness born of recognizing the truth,

And then I wrote down every bitter word, even some she didn’t say.

Now You See Me… Now You Don’t

How does an artist know himself?  Now there’s a difficult question.  I spend all my time looking at the world with the eyes of imagination.  I don’t even seem to be able to take photographs in the normal way other people do.  Maybe I should consider this self-think through the medium of pictures I have made with captions added to them?

c360_2017-02-08-10-44-05-487

Mickey is not actually me.  He is my “other” me, my pen name, my goofier self.

My high school art teacher told me that when an artist draws someone, he always ends up making it look a little bit like himself.  That is because, I suppose, an artist can only draw what he knows and he really only knows himself.  That being said, this post should really look just like me.

Troll Time at the Local Doll House

c360_2017-02-24-13-19-49-187

You know that old doll house that my wife rescued for me?  You don’t?  Well, about six or seven years ago she spotted it on the sidewalk with a pile of other trash waiting for the city garbage collectors.  She asked the homeowner about it.  It was a kit they had bought at Michael’s but never finished, so my wife immediately thought, “My goofy old husband collects dolls all the time, so he will love this.”

“Take it,” said the homeowner, “It’s a shame to have to throw it out.”

So she brought it home and gave it to me.  I of course, collect twelve inch dolls and action figures, none of which fit in a doll house of this particular scale.  So it had to sit practically empty for a space of about four years.  Then my daughter got tired of some of the small Happy Meal dolls that she had gotten from McDonald’s when she was a wee gamin.  (Yes, that’s a real thing… you can look it up.)  I acquired two mostly naked Mini-Barbies, and four other doll-house size dolls, two baseball players and a Lullaby League Girl from Oz, along with a small Winkie Soldier.  Then Dreamworks did the Trolls movie.

c360_2017-02-24-13-15-54-504bb

They began moving in by two different routes, these trolls.  Teacher Troll and Baby Troll and Big Troll, whose hair in the back is the only visible part of him… or possibly her, moved in from where I found them in kids’ bedrooms and the garage while cleaning.  I used to keep a stash of them to give out as classroom prizes back in the 90’s.  I bought the movie Trolls from Walmart at $5 a shot over a bunch of weeks between Thanksgiving and last weekend.  The empty spaces where I didn’t even have appropriate doll furniture were now being filled by Trolls.

c360_2017-02-24-13-17-43-418

In the downstairs bedroom you can see the little yellow Troll has joined Naked Mini-Barbie, the Lullaby-Leaguer, Ceramic Book-Lovin’ Bear and the Angel who used to hold my wedding ring.  (I could never wear it due to arthritis, and it eventually got lost in the move from South Texas to Dallas.)  (Yes, I know it is not a good thing to lose your wedding ring, but it is possible my wife sold it so she could shop for a better husband.  At least, that’s what she told me while she was really angry.)  (And yes, I know I’m supposed to be talking about Trolls taking over my doll house, but I actually like bird-walking while telling such stories.  It lends such every-day Mickey-ness to the story.)

c360_2017-02-24-13-18-52-533The baseball player in the upstairs sitting room where nobody sits, once spent an entire winter at the bottom of the swimming pool.  That’s why his blue uniform turned a bit putrid green.  He stays in this room with my Wish-nik Troll from 1967 and the Winkie Soldier from Oz, who is naturally green in the face and never took a swim.

c360_2017-02-24-13-16-39-610

Also upstairs are my Troll-topped Pez dispensers, two more movie Trolls, and the former Teacher Troll who lost her apple and my daughter gave a modelling clay diaper to for modesty’s sake which has long since melted a bit (the diaper, not the modesty).

c360_2017-02-24-13-19-16-237

And at the top of it all, in the attic, are the two movie Trolls that I bought first and started this whole Troll-collection nonsense.  So now the doll house is no longer empty.  But the Trolls are beginning to complain that there is no paint on the walls, and I really ought to do something about that before they take matters into their own hands.  You never know what they might do in the middle of the night when nobody is looking.

Updating the Countdown

I have been drawing fiercely before my talent goes away. So, I will show you some of this week’s practice.

I drew this from a photo of one of the nudists in my doll collection. I always seem to have more dolls than clothing that fits them.

This also used a doll for the model. She had a dress on, but this one and all the roses are imaginary.

This is a picture of Susu, my imaginary granddaughter, modeled on a young Instagram friend that I follow. She likes my pictures.

This is a doodle portrait, drawn entirely from my head, without a model.

About Bruce Timm

“Today I thought I would tell you about Bruce Timm.”

“Bruce Timm?  Who the heck is he?”

“You know. That artist with that style… you know, the Batman guy.”

“You mean he played Batman?”

“No.  He designed Batman; The Animated Series.”

“Oh, that guy… the guy who draws girls really good.”

“Yes, that’s the one.”

new-justice-league-series-bruce-timm

“He gave all the DC heroes their modern, animated look… their style and flair.  He made them angular, immediately identifiable, and powerful.”

“Yeah, I think he not only did the Batman cartoon, all film noir and retro-cool, but the Superman series that followed it, the Justice League, and all the cartoon series and movies that went along with those.”

“But that’s not all he did, either, is it?”

“No, there’s more.  He wanted to be a comic book artist, but before he got into animation, Marvel and DC turned him down.”

25e4094273e0d5a978ef3c3055e68176

“I heard he worked at Filmation for a while.”

“Yes, he got a chance to draw and design characters for Blackstar, Flash Gordon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra; Princess of Power, and the Lone Ranger.

“Dang!  He was busy.  But only superhero stuff?”

“In 1989 he went to work for Warner Brothers.  He worked on Tiny Toon Adventures.”

“That Spielberg/Bugs Bunny thing?  The one with Buster and Babs Bunny?”

“Yeah, that one, believe it or not.”

gimeno-logo-5-tiny-toons-copy

“Tell me more about the girls.  I want to hear about him drawing girls.  Wonder Woman in Justice League was hot.”

“Showing you is probably better than telling you.  Be prepared to cover your eyes, though.  He liked to draw the female figure nude and semi-naked.”

“I like how he draws pretty girls.”

“You would.”

“He’s the artist you wish you could be, isn’t he?”

“Pretty much.  He’s about four years younger than me.  If I had gone the comic-book artist route instead of becoming a public school teacher, our careers might’ve been parallel.”

“Except he has talent.”

“Yeah, there’s that.”

Before I Lose the Light

I sit at my drawing board, drawing quite madly,

Before glaucoma curses with blindness so badly,

And my age is advanced, so the Reaper is watching,

And papery skin all over is splotching.

I have to be vigilant and wise with my time,

And clever enough to catch the next rhyme.

Time’s running out on the next thing to do,

As I’m leaving behind small wisdoms for you.

11.22.63

img20000242AA.JPG

The impact of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination ó and its meaning 25 years later ó are explored in the’ hour-long documentary JFK – A TIME REMEMBERED, premiering Monday, November 21 at 9 p.m. (ET; check local listings) on PBS. Presented by WNET/New York, the program is a production of The Susskind Company and is made possible by funding from General Dynamics.

As a conspiracy nut registered with the Monkey-Brained Theorists of America, the grand old MBTA, I was absolutely tickled pink by the new Stephen King series on Hulu, 11.22.63.  I have seen the first episode and loved the mix of fantasy, science-fiction, history, and horror that goes into telling a story of man who walks through a time portal into the past to be able to prevent the assassination of John Kennedy.  Believe me, I know it is not true, despite what some of the anti-conspiracy nay-sayers will tell you about me.  After all, they have a Monkey-Brained Club of their own and don’t even know it.

kennedy-662C-9D0F-9B01

I went on a binge of watching JFK assassination-related videos on Hulu and on YouTube.  There is some very good information out there compiled by some very dedicated and dogged researchers.  The man who wrote the book Crossfire, Jim Marrs, is a very talented writer and researcher whose book became the basis for the movie JFK by Oliver Stone.

jim-marrs

Sitchin-tabs

Marrs has an unfortunate gullibility that leads him to state as truth some very bizarre things about the New World Order, aliens and Area 51, the research of Alexander Sitchin into the ancient secrets of the Sumerians… and granted, I can’t prove some of the absolutely loony things contained in that aren’t true, but they are absolutely loony never-the-less.  But when it comes to researching documents, interviewing and re-interviewing principle witnesses, and verifying facts, Marrs makes a very compelling case for the assassination of the President of the United States being done by the CIA, Secret Service, FBI, and President Lyndon Johnson.

hqdefault

It is a logical conclusion that Secret Service performed a cover-up during the assassination and its aftermath.  They spirited the President’s body away in spite of the Dallas rules for murder investigation and autopsy.  They washed and repaired the car it occurred in before the murder investigation could examine anything.  They interfered with the actual autopsy, with important notes, photographs, and even the President’s brain that were placed in Secret Service’s custody going missing.  No matter what you believe about the lone shooter theory, you can’t deny that a cover-up is the only explanation for these facts.

Kennedy_11-22_Oswald-mugshot_3239398-E

There is documented evidence that Lee Harvey Oswald was working on the fringes of the CIA operation in New Orleans and reporting to J. Edgar Hoover about their activities.  So, if he was a spy telling the right hand what the left hand was actually up to, who better to frame as the guilty gunman and then silence him before investigators could find out everything he knew?

worldmourns3

And why does all this still matter more than 50 years later?  Many of the actual perpetrators are dead, including former CIA hit man E. Howard Hunt who confessed to having a part in the assassination on his death bed.  They can’t be punished now.  But the corrupt organizations and political elite with their attendant influence are still operating in the world.  This was a murder that never came to trial.  Many of the facts have been sealed away by the very government agencies that have the most to hide.  Connections to other CIA manipulations, like those surrounding 9-11, need to be revealed, and the way the government operates needs to be modified.  But besides the fact that these things seriously impact our lives now, it is simply fun to dig and make connections and learn things that most people don’t generally know.  There is monkey-brained joy in that.

Life Inside

20160220_080755

There is a certain amount of frustration that comes with age and arthritis and limited ability to move.  A good share of the time I am stuck within my bedroom/studio.  Bad weather and weather changes, as well as the strains of housework, stiffen my back into immobility.  So, I am stuck exploring not the outside world, but the inner world of stories, pictures, and my own imagination.

new girlfriends4_o

Of course, one has to beware of a life lived in imagination and isolation.  Some of it can be kinda wicked and dangerous.  Okay, maybe not, but definitely in danger of overwhelming goofiness.  As you can see, I take a bit of my artwork and use photo-shop to make even goofier arty things.  I experiment and stick stuff together just for the heck of it.

I suppose this is probably evidence a good psychiatrist could use to keep me locked up for a while.  But I’m kinda stuck anyway in my little room.

Interview with a Faun

She came over the fence at Elmer’s farm,

Leaping like a deer, the white tail flying behind her,

Into the middle of Elmer’s cookout seeking me.

“What’s this?” I exclaimed, “A faun wearing clothes?”

“Elmer’s oldest boy is a Sensitive like you,” she said.

“I don’t need farm boy to see me nude again,,

At least, not until I decide to seduce him.”

“You must be Su-Fey Pan,

Radasha told me about you.”

She grinned a sinister grin.

“It must be nice to own your own faun.”

“I own him not,” I said of Ra,

“He came to me during my trauma.”

“He led me to the garden in my mind to heal.”

“That’s what I must do for Elmer”s boy, Wilbur.”

“Because he alone survived his mother’s car crash?”

She only nodded sadly.

The farmer’s wives with plates of mashed potatoes,

Looked at me strangely for talking to myself.

“So, why have you come here seeking only me?”

“Because you write a book of poems,

And claim you are an awful poet.

And you know of fauns and fairies,

And what their uses are.

And you understand the metaphors,

And sling the symbols all around.

And you understand that poetry

Sucks the poison from your soul

And turns venom into candy,

With sound and fury and sometimes even rhyme.”

“And you are asking me to give you some of that for him?”

“That magic, yes, to save his life,

From you through me to him.”

“And how is this miracle to be done?”

“Kiss my cheek, and give it me,

And I’ll bestow on him.”

I kissed her lightly on the sun-tanned cheek.

She grinned, a twinkle in her hazel eyes.

And she kissed me back on the lips.

The magic took my sight away.

Su-Fey was gone.

“Mickey, are you all right?” said a farmer’s wife,

“Or are you having another episode?”

“Oh, I’ll be fine,” I said, still smirking.

“Is there any of that sausage left?”
