Portraits in Pen and Ink

Simple, clean lines and basic, well-defined shapes go together in black and white.  They are in the basic nature of being a cartoonist.  You translate what you see into line drawings where a few simple lines become a complex and meaningful image.

My one-legged Batman is an exercise in  foreshortening and trying to burst through the two-dimensional confines of the page to grab the viewer.  I learned this trick from comic book artist Jim Lee.

She was an excellent teacher and former nun… she was a mentor to me, taught me a lot about life and love and great beauty.  How do you adequately portray the wisdom and the patience in those highly magnified eyes?  I drew from memory only.  She never considered herself beautiful.  But she was.  And it hurts not to be able to capture it correctly.

Not every portrait is literal.  Sometimes you exaggerate facial characteristics and behavioral quirks are emphasized to create humor in the portrait.

When I was first married I did a double portrait of us as a knight and his lady fair.  I know, I know… it is so sickeningly sweet that it punches me right in the diabetes.  But, hey, it doesn’t really look like me anyway.   It is more of a portrait of Porky Pig in glasses and hair.

There is an art to pen and ink that cuts right to the heart of who you are and who you want to be.  Simple lines in black and white… there is no more incisive tool for putting my goofy old mind down on paper.

Magic Words That Can Make You Disappear

Yesterday I managed to make a ridiculous post about the dangers of using humor in the classroom.  I managed to leave out one of the dangers that daily annoys every teacher of middle schoolers who has ever been even remotely dedicated to the notion that you must at least try to follow the school rules if you wish to remain employed and outside of the prison system.    That tiger trap is the important societal rule against certain magic words.  You know the ones.  Those words that, if you dare to say them out loud in the classroom as a student, make you instantly disappear… and learn hard words like the word “consequences”, and “eternal detention”, and “Would you like fries with that?”  And if you are a teacher, those words lead to other hard words like “special school board meeting” and “disciplinary action”, and though they take longer to work their magic, eventually also “Would you like fries with that?”

These magic words are a serious danger and roadblock to teaching young minds because they so easily begin flowing out of young mouths.  When you become a teacher infamous for using humor in the classroom, those young minds who don’t really have the big word of “inhibitions” wired into their circuitry yet will think license to laugh in the classroom is the same as license for dropping the magic F-word, or the magic S-word, or the combo-magic M-F-word.  And those words invariably make somebody disappear completely… sometimes even permanently.

Being a Texas teacher, I have experience with the ridiculously harsh notion of Zero Tolerance Policies.  Yes, in Texas we give the death penalty for swearing at the teacher.  Well, maybe only a trip to court in front of an unfriendly judge who will levy a fifty dollar fine for the sin and then forbid the parents to pay it, making the child choose between paying it himself or spending a night in jail.  So it is definitely in the students’ best interests if the teacher navigates around magic words in the laughing classroom environment.

You do this primarily through modeling.  I never use even remotely offensive words in conversations with students.  I sometimes even correct myself out loud for using interjections when I am mad like “Oofahdoo!” or “Fabulous French Frick-a-see-see!” because, as I point out to them, we all know what magic words they are filling in for.  Context can often say for us the word we are not supposed to say.   I have also been known to fake getting mad at them for saying “Criminnittly!” or “Hang-dang it!” in imitation of me because the teacher getting mad over the use of certain words is an absolute guarantee that the word will come out of the student the next time he or she needs to express inappropriate sentiment in the classroom.  A teacher’s job, then, becomes the putting of lipstick on the pig.  Because we are burdened with rules that absolutely prevent the use of George Carlin words in the classroom, and when the powers that be see the lipstick on the pig, they will think “Marilyn Monroe”, and their absolutes will be satisfied.  Of course, I am begging you… please don’t tell them that it is really still a pig.

Avoiding the Tiger Traps of a Humorous Life

In point of fact, using humor in the classroom is one of the easiest ways I know to become a beloved and effective teacher.  But it requires skill.  It is like dancing barefoot in a mine field that is littered with pit traps for trapping tigers.  See how I linked the title to my opening paragraph there?  Kids in the classroom don’t… unless you make it funny.  Sometimes they want you to fall in the tiger trap on purpose even though there are punji sticks at the bottom.  They want to see what the consequences of the mistake really are so they are not surprised when they immediately make that same mistake.

So, let me tell you about a few of those tiger traps and how to navigate through them.

Poo-Poo Jokes

Yes, one of the unfortunate truths about humor in the classroom is that nothing is funnier to middle school and high school kids than references to sticky brown stuff.  (If that last statement made you snicker, then you know that it even goes beyond school.)   And it can be a devastating thing on fragile, fledgling egos in a school environment where boys will invariably stick a half-eaten chocolate bar in a back pocket on a hot day even though they are wearing khaki-colored jeans.  Over-reacting to a sudden fragrance from one of a number of volatile digestive systems packed into the same small classroom can completely empty the room and imperil the teacher’s job.  (Principals don’t appreciate unauthorized leaving of the classroom… so teachers need to quickly learn how to calm-and-continue in an unusually gassy environment.)  Of course, the girl leading the lemming rush out of the classroom under gas attack is usually the one who dealt it.  But you can’t point that out without crushing some young flower’s petals of self-image.  It is necessary to lay down fences of regulation at the beginning of the school year to regulate exactly how brown and sticky a bathroom joke can actually be before it traps you in eternal detention.

Hurt-y Humor

There is the kind of humor that numerous comedians use as their fall-back style, that Don Rickles-esque “Your mama’s so fat that satellites can see her from space”sort of humor.  It is also a highly tiger-trappy sort of humor to use in the classroom.  Students don’t perform well after being the butt of slappy-face-style put-downs.  You don’t want to remind the kid in the back row of how he mixed up the words “pied” and “peed” in last week’s read-aloud right before taking the State science test that will determine his educational future and your next evaluation.  So how do you resist the urge to tell the snooty little cheerleader that just told you her mom is going to get you fired that she’s got a tail of toilet paper hanging down from the back of her skirt… when she actually does… and the football player she most idolizes is watching every move she makes with that big, tart and trippy tongue of hers?  You take pity on them, and remember that if you break them down into tears in front of their peers you are doing the same thing to them that Bully Bob Beegshout did to you back in high school.  Self-deprecating humor is far more effective at defusing a confrontation.  You get them to laugh at themselves by making them see themselves in the story you just told on yourself.  You can often make them laugh themselves right out of the bad behavior that way.  (Oh, and I didn’t point out the toilet paper, but you can wait until someone else inevitably does and karma can balance the universe in that way.)

So, now that I have rolled well past the 500-word goal and still haven’t used up the whole list of tiger traps, I suppose it is time to reveal there will be a follow-up to this post.

Why Did I Create All of This?

There is probably no mystery in Paffooney #1. Kitty sends me provocative pictures via Instagram. She’s actually twenty-two years old, but she looks twelve. I believe other lustful old coots send her money and gifts for providing the bunny pictures like the one that inspired this goofy Paffooney. I am not a creepy old man… most of the time. But though my sex life is pretty much over, I still remember it and still have a few hormones left in my libido-fueled, impotent memory. I can send her digital copies of the drawings I make of her. But I have no other money or gifts to give her for the stream of rabbit pictures she produces at the rate of real breeding rabbits. She’s a cute girl the age of my daughter, so I follow her. But I do not do what other old lust-filled coots do. At least I think I don’t. I prefer to make Paffooneys.

These are a few of my Instagram pictures that I have put out there instead of selfies in bunny costumes like Kitty makes. I don’t look as good in a bunny suit as Kitty does. I have also published twenty-four novels and books full of my fiction, essays, and poetry. I am a real artist and author even though I don’t make more than pocket change for any of it. So, why do I do it?

Well, for one thing, I am retired. I need to do something to replace my career as the monkey instructor in the monkeyhouse (translation; a middle school teacher.) You get addicted to giving heartfelt advice to monkeys ages twelve to fifteen in a very loud and forceful voice without using any too-colorful metaphors or hitting anybody with sticks (translation; teaching English.) I miss talking to monkeys. So, I make up monkeys based on remembered monkeys and put them into interesting plots to fill up the time before I finally die. (Of course, old English teachers never die. They simply stop being heard and lose all their class.) And now that digital tools and AI apps help me draw as much as I used to before the arthritis in my hands got bad, I also draw lots of monkey pictures, mostly depicting monkeys.

I can draw pictures of evil vice principals now too. You know, the security beasts in the monkey house who discipline the monkeys by roasting teachers over fire pits until they are finally willing to hit monkeys with sticks. Of course, you can’t teach monkeys monkey tricks if you hit them with sticks. That’s why I got roasted a lot by beasts like Billy Bob Smashdareburger pictured above.

It’s like I can’t help myself anymore. I have to write and draw goofy stuff and try to get people to read it like I used to entice monkeys to take books like The Giver and The Hobbit home with them to open in front of parents and pretend to read so they could come in the next day at the monkey house to get talked to in a loud voice without overly-colorful metaphors or hitting sticks being used.

It is much more difficult to let go of teaching things to monkeys and gradually stop doing all those habitual rituals a teacher in the monkey house has to do. So I fill the time with drawing Paffooneys and telling lies about monkeys (translation; being an author and artist.)

Something Creative Goes Here

Not Alone

Sometimes the creative brain gets a little too hot and needs time to cool.  That means I need a meaningless filler post to maintain my every-day posting.  So, I give you a picture of Mike Murphy carrying his girlfriend, Blueberry Bates’ books home from the bus stop on a country road in Iowa.  And, of course, they happen to meet an alien named George Jetson, whose father named him after a character on his favorite Earther TV show from the 60’s.  It is a strange thing to have your brain over-heat from too many creative neurons firing at the same time.  But it can lead to notions of intergalactic peace and cultural exchange… or racist comments like, “Tellerons have heads that look like giant boogers!”  But I should be able think more rationally tomorrow.  I hope that turns out to be a good thing.

Norwall

rowan schoolThe little Iowa town where all my hometown novels are set is based on the little town where I grew up and spent all of my school years from Kindergarten to Senior Year of High School.  I call it Norwall.  It has all the same letters in it as the town of Rowan, the real town behind all my farm-boy fantasies.  I also added an “L” for love and an “L” for laughter.  All these stories, whether written already or still percolating in my demented bean, are set in this little town.

The school building where I went to learn through the sixth grade was gone after the 1980’s.  But the gymnasium with its theater built in still stands and is used as a community center to this day.  It was here where I had my first crush, where I first saw a girl naked who was not my relative, where I was deeply embarrassed during the square-dancing lessons in Miss Molton’s Music Class, and where I told such big black hoo-haw lies that I truly got the proper training I needed to be a story-teller.

This isn’t what Main Street really looked like to me.  I saw it in the 1960’s and 70’s.  This is the 1950’s, when the artist who created this blanket was in high school.  But It contains the world I knew.  The water tower is missing, but the fire station and post office are there at the far end of the street on your left.  The grocery store, the cafeteria with its George’s Malt Shop sign, the Brenton Bank building, and the hardware store are there on the left.  The town hall and V.F.W. is on the right hidden by the trees.  You can just see the steeple of the old Congregational Church that was torn down and moved to a new location during some of my earliest memories of the street.

This is what it looks like now that the hardware store is gone.  The bank and the cafeteria have been updated and changed.    The water tower has changed from silver to blue.

The Methodist Church, built in the thirties and torn down in the eighties, was an important part of my boyhood.  It was a place where my faith in God was nurtured and reinforced to the point that my highly active and existential mind could never truly turn to atheism and doubt.  It was also the place where a Methodist minister took the time to explain the facts of life to me and helped me overcome the terrible secret I kept inside me about being molested when I was ten.  In more than one way, my life was saved in this building.  I miss the place terribly.

So, here it is, the town that made me who I am and provides the background for the most important thinking and writing that I will ever be able to do.

Last Week was a Worst Week

Yes, that’s a downed tree in the park next to our house. It was a beautiful old live oak that gave ample shade to the picnic table by the bridge across the creek. Now it is wood for fireplaces and toothpicks.

We had a tornado. It never touched down. The funnel cloud never touched the ground. It was high enough in the air to spare practically all the houses in the North Dallas suburbs. It was not kind to trees, however. We lost the live oak’s top section that defends the house’s western front side. The severed tree section fell on the sidewalk to our front door rather than bashing the roof, so we were incredibly lucky. Everybody in our neighborhood lost at least tree branches if not whole trees. Everybody was lucky too on damage to their homes.

The freaky, scary almost tornado did manage to flood the floors in our house with downhill runoff from above us. It hit us with high winds a little after 4 o’clock in the morning on Monday, May 27th. The lights almost went out that day, but decided not to drown us in darkness too. I thought it was the end of the line until the wind died down and we could think about what happened next.

So, Tuesday my family got on a plane for a vacation to the US Virgin Islands. My wife, still teaching at age… oops, not making that mistake… had well-earned that vacation, and the damage was not so bad that it couldn’t wait until they got back. The dog and I stayed home. She has doggy breast cancer and is dying. I can’t travel on airplanes due to arthritis. So, we planned a quiet week at home.

I began work on this colored-pencil drawing to see how well I could still do completing it without AI help due to arthritis, glaucoma, and gradual oncoming color blindness. And while I was working on that, the lights went out on Thursday morning. Storm damage was having its delayed joke effect. Blackout to thirty houses in our neighborhood. And work crews had to add us to the end of a long list of electrical repairs, some of which were probably in hospitals or fire stations. So, it turned out to be a four-day vacation from having electricity. I spent one night in the dark house with the heat from no air conditioning, no working refrigerator or microwave to provide food, and no air purifier to protect my breathing parts from pollen and mold. I quickly learned to spend the nights in my car with the engine running and the air conditioning on. (Outdoors, of course, not committing carbon monoxide suicide in a garage.)

During the blackout, I didn’t merely sit in my car with the air conditioner on. On Thursday I went to see the Ryan Reynolds movie IF. It was great. I also drew a lot more on my colored-pencil project above. My AI Mirror app is on my phone, so I turned my finished art project into a polished piece you see the best version of above. Then, on Friday, I tried going to a movie again. Nope. Car accident on the access road to the Interstate. I side-swiped a working van. Minor damage to both vehicles. A policeman had to come and make an accident report. I called my insurance agent and learned I would owe 900 dollars to repair both vehicles. So, I returned to a dark house fully stressed and depressed and thoroughly something-else-essed to stew in my own misery in the dark.

I read half of a Nicholas Sparks novel called The Return and drew the new picture Paffooney you see above And then, miraculously the lights returned Saturday evening. So, I got a night’s sleep with the air purifier. Then Sunday… the lights went out again. No explanation from Oncor or Direct Energy. And I went from depressed to super-depressed.

My WordPress streak of consecutive days of posting ended at 274 because of this blackout. I had an expensive accident where I was at fault, probably due to stress because of this blackout. I lost sleep. I got to hear the local Vatos Locos of the Hispanic street gang that decided to protect our block during the dark night as they played Chicano Rap Music loudly at the mouth of the alley to warn away anyone who might try to loot dark houses in their proclaimed territory.

Thankfully, the lights were fully repaired and back on by Sunday evening… throughout the DFW Metroplex. And that’s my storm story for this week.

Blushing in the Garden of Eden

Superchicken xOne of the fundamental truths of my life is that God has a very strange sense of humor and He has chosen me to be the brunt of the nudity jokes.  Yes, me, the shyest kid in town, especially when it comes to seeing someone else naked, or (shudder!) someone seeing me naked.  To say that I was a teenage prude would be an understatement.  I did not even believe in thinking about people being naked.  People are naked under their clothes?  Aaagh!

I dreaded the start of fifth grade, because in PE class you had to change into PE clothes and take showers when it was over.  Not just any kind of private, in-your-own-bathroom kind of shower, but one big tiled room full of shower heads where you had to be naked in front of other boys.  Other boys like fat Tiger Bates who taught me the facts of life with only a few major distortions.  Other boys like Kevin Swello who had hair in places we didn’t even want to know about, let alone see.  Coming of age and facing the world of locker rooms and shower rooms and boys’ PE was one of the hardest things for me.

Well, I made it through that part of my childhood by telling God all about it and being strengthened by Him.  But then, He decided never to let me forget about it.  College in the 70’s was wilder than my little-town morals could take.  I avoided Dorm drinking parties where party-goers sometimes played strip poker seriously with members of the opposite sex.  When one of my two roommates decided to go streaking on his motorcycle, I avoided getting caught up in it in any way.  Well, of course, everybody avoided that particular bit of stupidity, because it was snowing and the temperature was below zero.  Ol’ Wildman Beckham nearly froze off parts of himself that he could ill afford to lose to frostbite.  There were a lot of things to avoid in college.

I was always a very good artist, though, and as a raw talent I took Art classes even though I was an English Major.  That led to the biggest blushing of my young life.  Level 4 Drawing Class was drawing the human figure from life.  I didn’t realize what that actually meant until halfway through the third week of that class.  That is when the first nude model walked in to class.  Dang!  I was red in the face for the rest of the week.  The mostly female class giggled behind their hands at me.  The teacher, the illustrious department head, Dr. Louise Broffert, said things to us that just made it worse.  “You know there is a difference between art and pornography,” she said, glaring at the few male members of the class.  “It is mainly a matter of focus and point of view.  I expect not to see any of the wrong point of view!”  Oh, God!  And pretty as that first model was, I was unfortunate to be sitting in a position where her innermost secrets were obvious and well-lit in front of me.

And it got worse.  Students in Art 4 and above were asked to be the models!  Guys as well as girls were expected to take their turns.  Besides, you made ten dollars per session for posing for your classmates.  Oooh!  The memory still makes me shiver.  As well as it should.  It was a Winter Quarter class.  Fortunately, my turn coincided with a bout of the flu.  I was infectious on my day and couldn’t attend.  Even better, I got a note from student services suggesting I better not risk further exposure to the cold.  God put me through several sleepless nights of the sweats, but in the end He made a way out for me.  Of course, I ended up with a C in that class.  The lowest course grades I got in college were both C’s that I got from Art classes.

God was not done teasing me about it yet.  I learned while studying Shakespeare and the Elizabethans that there existed in their time a sect who called themselves the Adamites.  They were named for the Garden of Eden and Adam in his natural state.  The idiots tried to build for themselves a Utopian society, a popular thing at the time, and they walked around their little gated communities buck naked all the time.  Well, I have to say, I got a good laugh out of reading about them, without ever realizing it was my doom to meet their modern-day counterparts.

As a young teacher in South Texas, teaching English to Spanish-speaking Junior High students, I took up with a pretty Latino Lady, lovely Isabella Daniels.  She was divorced from one Gringo already, and not quite willing to commit to another.  Hence, we never married.  She was, however, a liberated lady living in a world after the Sexual Revolution and before the dampening effects of AIDS.  She was not as shy about her naked charms as I was.  My parents lived near Austin, so we often went for the weekend to the Austin area.  I stayed with my folks, she stayed with her sister.  The thing is, her sister lived in a clothing-optional apartment complex on Manor Road in Austin.  It would be my first experience visiting naturists and nudists where they lived.

The apartment complex was built a lot like an English fortress from Elizabethan times.  It was a huge rectangle with a central court yard cut off from view of all the surroundings.  The first time I picked Isabella up there, I was put off by the iron bars on the gate.  The entry portal was completely cut off from the world at large by locks.  I had to ask the bearded gate guard to let Isabella know I was there.  When he had spoken with her, he came back to get me and asked me to come in.  He was naked!  I had only seen his head in the barred gateway window.  I didn’t get the full Monty until he ushered me inside.  And there was no beauty in him at all.  Hair everywhere, like ol’ Kevin with a beard.

Inside I found a grassy courtyard with a swimming pool in the center.  Two young girls, they must have been nine or ten, were skinny dipping in the pool and having a whee of a time.  There was a pool table beside the swimming pool, under the shadowy canopy of the second story balcony.  Around the pool table a number of portly men were playing pool and bickering with each other completely in the buff.  As I waited, my eyes ended up fastened on two young ladies that wore t-shirts, but no pants at all.  One of them noticed me looking and tugged at the front of her t-shirt as if to cover up.  After that one little ineffective movement, however, they took no more notice of me, standing there all gawky and red in the face.

Isabella never let me live down the expression she saw on my face when she collected me that first time.  She laughed roundly at my expense.  She invited me to stay there too.  I would have none of it.  She had no shame about walking about in the all-together, but I was not trained to be that way.

From the times I had to visit her there I learned quite a bit about naturists.

They are not what I expected.  They tend to be reasonable people in all other ways, bankers, lawyers, computer programmers, and Postal Service delivery persons.  They just have this nutty habit of stripping nude and walking around like that.  They don’t understand my reluctance and inhibitions any more than I understand them.  But they are not bad and immoral people.  The place was not a gawd-awful orgy site.  It was a quiet conservative domicile where naked people lived.

Mark Twain once said in the Diary of Adam and Eve that naked people have very little influence in society.  This is generally true.  The naturists don’t want that influence.  They just want to be left alone.  They will, however, proselytize.  After Isabella and I broke up, I encountered naturists again when I took up stamp collecting.  I found some stamp-collectors and traders in Florida that were also practicing naturists.  Besides selling stamps by mail order, they ran a naturist park near Tampa and sold naturist publications of all kinds.  They wanted me to come to Florida for my Summer Vacation from school, and they promised to gradually teach me to be a naturist.  They wanted me to join the ANS (American Naturist Society) and I ended up buying a number of books from them and learning about their gentle philosophy of family naturism.  Nudists, I discovered, are mostly married, have families, and are quite fat, not beautiful in the least.  Also, they are worldwide.  There is a strong naturist movement in England where they even have a school; I think it’s like a high school, where all the students are nude.  The FKK in Germany (Frei Korper Kultur) has most of the beaches on the North Sea draped with naked people.  They must only play naked on the beach there, huh?  The North Sea is definitely not warm enough for me!

So you can see, God has gotten a good laugh out of me and my reluctance to embrace the body He blessed me with.  I am NOT a naturist now, if that’s what you’re thinking.  I don’t take my clothes off in public.  But, I know people who do.  And I am not as shocked and horrified by it as I once was.

I hope you can forgive all my pictures of naked people.  I am not trying to become a pornographer.  Remember, Dr. Broffert says that it is all a matter of perspective.

A Story to Tell

I am not ready to tell it. But last Monday we had a tornado that didn’t touch down. It did rip the top part of our live oak tree off and drop it outside our front door. Everybody in our neighborhood lost tree branches and numerous small things that weren’t nailed down. It is a miracle that no houses were destroyed. Of course, the tornado cruised over our heads high up in the atmosphere. Still, it was a week-long nightmare, and I am not sure it is over yet. I will get the story told. But I am not ready to tell it yet.

Western Art

Yesterday, on Friday the Thirteenth, we went to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth.  My parents, both in their eighties, took us there in a week-long celebration of Dorin’s graduation from high school.  It was a worthy thing.  Unlike most kids, my three are not bored to apoplexy by art museums.  In fact, for most of the exhibitions, they traveled at my heels.  It seems I know enough about art to fascinate them.  All three of them are amateur artists themselves.

The Amon Carter Museum is centered on old Mr. Carter’s collection of the paintings of Frederick Remington and Charles Russell.

Remington was an adventurer and story-teller.  He was also a sculptor with a gift for creating action-filled scenes in bronze.  The Bronco Buster, the statue pictured here, is on prominent display in the foyer of the museum.  It is one of Remington’s first, and one of his best known (in large part due to the Amon Carter Collection).  The painting that follows was used as an illustration for one of his western stories.  Remington wrote western novels, articles about the west, and factual essays about Native Americans.  He had actually lived with Indians for a while and did a lot to lend credibility to everything he wrote about them.  He didn’t save them from the depredations of the white man, but then, who could have done that?  His nighttime scene is ultra-realistic and you can learn a lot about Indians just by studying the picture.

Russell came after Remington by a few years, but he was a contemporary and an admirer of Remington’s work.  Russell is also an artist of intricate detail and accuracy, having also studied Indians from inside their villages and camps.  The Silk Robe painting shown below and exhibited at the Carter reveals detailed knowledge of curing a buffalo hide that only could have come from watching the process in real life.  He also did bronze sculpture and watercolor paintings along with his fantastic oil paintings.  In fact, in his day, Russell was considered a sculptor who also paints.  I don’t know how you can look at his cowboy art and still believe that.   He is a truly masterful painter.

You’ll have to forgive me for taking a break from the usual humor blog, but I have an overwhelming love for art and painting, and this museum visit put an Indian arrow right through my silly old heart.
